Centricity Series symposia are designed to facilitate interaction and a sharing of knowledge among clinicians and researchers through presentations detailing biomedical research and novel clinical observations on a specific disease or disorder. The focus of this symposium is to extend
awareness of central nervous system involvement in autoimmune disease, which will translate clinically to improved diagnostic abilities.
Objectives
At the conclusion of the course, participants should be able to:
- Promote increased awareness of central nervous system involvement in autoimmune disease, which will translate clinically to improved diagnostic abilities and patient care.
- Illustrate some of the molecular mechanisms underlying disturbances in brain function in these diseases, including the effects of autoantibodies and cytokine disturbances on central nervous system function and the role of the blood/brain barrier.
- Discuss new therapeutic strategies that include novel biologic therapies as well as the re-purposing of existing medications.
- Describe advances in neuroimaging techniques and neuropsychological testing for the assessment of central nervous system function and potential use as “biomarkers” for specific diseases
