The purpose of this symposium is to identify diseases in which inflammation drives pathology, to understand the inflammatory pathways involved in disease pathogenesis and to evaluate the potential of currently approved as well as novel anti-inflammatory therapeutic modalities to treat these diseases. Examples in Alzheimer’s disease, schizophrenia, spinal cord injury, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, cardiovascular disease, and cancer will be discussed.

Program Goals

At the conclusion of the course, participants should be able to:

  • Characterize inflammatory mechanisms that contribute to pathology in neurologic, autoimmune, cardiovascular and infectious diseases and cancer.
  • Recognize the role of inflammation in promoting or exacerbating disease-related pathology for conditions known to have an inflammatory component.
  • Define the importance of blocking inflammatory pathways in human disease.
  • Describe the use and effectiveness of anti-inflammatory therapies currently being used clinically.
  • Identify novel approaches, including bioelectronic medicine, to targeting inflammation in human disease.
